Verona in Italy is one of my favourite places. It sits among the wine hills of Valpolicella & Soave. The Food, Wine, People, Sunshine... and the Buildings... The Roman Amphitheatre has stood in the centre for 2000 years. Gladiators have been replaced for Opera & Music Concerts.
This shows a set up for a concert by Zucchero in 1998 on the Blue Sugar World Tour... Zucchero is a bit like an Italian version of Joe Cocker (1970s).
The stage is a SCAFF stage (Scaffold) and is used at festivals and open air gigs worldwide. The SCAFF stage represents the floor, sides and roof of a traditional theatre so that lights, PA & set etc can be lifted and hung from it.
I have been fortunate enough to have been to the arena twice before... in 1993 with 70's Prog Rock group Emerson, Lake & Palmer and in 1988 with George Michael. The George concert was cancelled and re scheduled at a local football stadium... The reason... The Scaff stage was unsuitable to take the weight of the Lights, Set & PA of the George Michael "Faith" production.
Now... the Zucchero concert went ahead as planned and all was good...However... I am not a RIGGER... but it seems to me that the Lights, Set, PA & Video screen (version 1998...aka very heavy) were probably too heavy for the SCAFF stage to support. To this day... in Italy and all over the world, concerts still take place on SCAFF stages that are unsuitable for the job.
